Remember the Billy Joel song called “Honesty”? Here are some of the lyrics…
”Honesty is such a lonely word. Everyone is so untrue.
Honesty is hardly ever heard…
and mostly what I need from you.”
I think Billy was right. Honesty seems to be lost. Honesty is not rewarded anymore. Honesty is really, really needed right now.
As I sat yesterday and listened to the US Senate ‘managers’ and the ‘president’s men’ argue over whether or not to allow witnesses in the impeachment trial, I listened for honesty. I tried to find it. I know I have a bias but I think I heard it coming from the Dems more. But, truly the back and forth debate was filled with lies on both sides, said as truth.
No wonder Americans are confused. Everybody talks… and yet nobody believes what is said. Nobody thinks there is honesty anywhere anymore.
Yesterday as I watched I kept wondering WHY in a court setting the people involved can not be held to a standard of honesty. Witnesses in all court cases have to swear on a Bible. (Of course witnesses are being denied in this case.) But Trump’s lawyers did not have to do the same. The managers and all the Senators signed that they would be open-minded and consider all the information brought forward.
Then the votes started happening, on including witnesses, and written transcripts. All the votes were split right down the party lines. Each time. Where was the honesty from the senators?
I have had some back and forth conversation online with local people who think those who testified in the earlier House hearing for Impeachment lied – under oath. Flat out sat there and made it all up. It hurts my heart to think that so many believe the witnesses lied under oath.
It started with terms like ‘fake news’ and ‘alternative truth.’ It started with a president lying every day, through tweets, and in front of the cameras – and not caring. It started because he got away with it. 3 years later,, honesty is gone..
What a sad state we are in.
Honesty. I want honesty. I want faith in honesty. I want truth and facts to be undeniable.
Oh, how can we get it back???
I don’t know.
