Yep, I’m going there…

I have recently seen commentaries from pro-lifers online and they seem to be a group of very black/white people.  What do I mean?    They profess that abortion is always bad, and that it goes against God’s teachings.  They believe it should never ever be allowed:   Anytime, anywhere, by anyone.

Pro-lifers are very eager to judge others, and are vocal about what women should decide to do with their own bodies, and yes, with unborn children.    They feel strongly that no woman in America should ever have the right to have an abortion and they want the government to make it a law.  They want to overturn “Roe vs. Wade.”

I wonder…  do they feel that they are (perhaps secretly) better in God’s eyes then others?    Do they believe that their sins are just not as bad as others?   Do these pro-lifers believe that God is black/white about this issue too?   Do they know someone who has ever been in a situation where terminating a pregnancy is considered?    And, yes, are they ready to take care of the children born due to lack of abortion as an option?

Pro-lifers:  listen:   Nobody, including me, EVER wants to see a woman put into the position of needing to consider abortion.  To think it is a “convenience” (As I read from someone yesterday) is just so off base.      Sometimes the life of a mother is at stake.   Sometimes a woman becomes pregnant from rape, or incest.   And, yes, it’s true , that sometimes a woman might just had made a bad mistake too.   (Oh – And by the way, it take TWO people for the creation in all of the circumstances.  Don’t forget that.)

I love God!  I love babies!  I love children!    I also love those who are struggling with incredibly hard decisions.  I feel for them.  Life’s not easy.   I know that God realizes that too.   God knows we are sinful humans and we often mess up.  Some mess ups are kinda small, some are pretty big.   They are still mess ups.   Yesterday in a ‘back and forth’ online conversation with a pro-lifer I suggested that God forgives, and it’s up to us to repent,, to change.  Oh my!  I was called all kinds of names… and it really kinda threw me.   These pro-lifers, who are mostly Christians, are doing exactly what God would not want them to do….  to condemn someone, and to belittle me.    “Love thy neighbor as thyself” went right out the window!

I believe that government has no place in making abortion decisions.   It should be decided between the woman (and man?), her doctor, and God.   I believe that we live in a country that offers modern medicine and we can make sure that procedures are clean and done in hospital settings.   I believe in offering counseling.  I believe in education and offering birth control.    I believe in compassion for those going through such a difficult time.

The Bible says that God knows each person before they are born.  Each is a unique individual, or soul.  And, God also offers eternal life beyond this blink of an eye on earth.   So, some people live to be 95. Some only make it to 65.  Some unfortunately die in an accident, or have mental illness and die “too early.”   God knows each and everyone… and God loves each and every single one.

So, pro-lifers, perhaps you can think about how it is that God knows you – because he does.  What does he think when you look down upon those who face difficult situations?  When you hurt them with condemnation, instead of lifting them up and giving them help?    When you don’t help the motherless?  Or the young ones already born, but living in cages or poor situations.

It is not a black/white issue.  It is also not a political issue.   Please stop making it one.
